Welcome to the Live Music Matters Blog! There is a big difference between listening to music online and watching a live performance. Although the true experience of a live performance can never be completely captured in any medium, this blog will serve to gather all of the elements of that experience - image, video, audio, and storyline - all in one place, so that those who are unable to attend the show, can have the next best thing. ............................................................................................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................ ................................ ....................................................................................................................................................................................................

THE STORY

Omar Rodriguez Lopez, guitarist, keyboardist for The Mars Volta, enters the stage with the rest of the Vato Negro lineup; drummer Deantoni Parks (KUDU, JOHN CALE, MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO), and the owner of the project, bassist Juan Alderete of THE MARS VOLTA. In a hast, they begin to organize their gear, set their levels, and adjust their straps, seats, and other controls. As the excitement in the crowd rises, people begin shouting out "Yeah Omar!" "Vato Negro!" alongside loud whistles and cheers. The background base melody playing as they setup, sets the tone for their dark, aggressive musical style.

Standing in the second row from the stage, the crowd begins to tighten, as people move in closer and closer in hopes to get a good view of the band. After about 15 minutes, but what seems like an eternity, Omar announces "We're Vato Negro!" as they erupt with an outpouring of tough riffs and drum patterns. The crowd roars and screams with more cheers and whistles. After about the first 10 minutes of their first song, the bartenders and waitresses begin standing on stools to get a glimpse of the group that is now demanding the attention of everyone in the small venue. It is at this point that it becomes clear to everyone that Vato Negro is no ordinary Tuesday-night-local band. This show is obviously some sort of special treat, perhaps a secret show of some extraordinary group, playing under some fake name at a small unheard of venue. Well, in reality, this is very much a special treat; one of only 4 warm up shows in the LA area of the incredibly talented trio Vato Negro. This very special warm up show serves as an important part of their preparation before they go overseas to perform at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival 2010.
